(St. Paul, MN) — A proposed bill to protects girls’ sports in Minnesota for females only will take over the State Capitol today (Mon). The measure sponsored by Republican Representative Peggy Scott of Andover would prohibit transgender athletes from joining sports designed for girls and women. Opponents say trans girls should be able to compete with girls because they are girls. Anti-transgender activist and former N-C-A-A champion swimmer Riley Gaines is participating in a rally with Minnesota House Republicans. There will also be a news conference with transgender advocates voicing their opposition to the measure. The bill is expected to come up for debate and a vote this afternoon during the House session.

(Washington, DC) — Members of Minnesota’s congressional delegation are concerned about the thousands of job layoffs at the U-S Department of Veterans Affairs. Representative Kelly Morrison serves on the House Veterans Affairs Committee and says, “to Willy-nilly fire people when the V-A is actually understaffed currently is really concerning.” She says they recently learned that more than a dozen people were fired from Minneapolis V-A. Morrison says Congress needs to make sure that our veterans have access to the benefits they have earned. An estimated six-thousand V-A workers have been laid off nationally.

(Duluth, MN) — For the second consecutive weekend, protesters gathered outside Republican Congressman Pete Stauber’s office in Hermantown, marking the largest turnout to date. Community members expressed their frustration with President Donald Trump and the role he has assigned to Elon Musk and DOGE. They are protesting cuts to Medicaid and veterans’ benefits. The protesters pledge to continue gathering every weekend until Stauber agrees to meet with them. The estimated crowd this weekend reached over 100 community members.

(St. Paul, MN) — State officials are disappointed about a 25-percent increase in pedestrian fatalities in Minnesota in 2024. Mike Hanson of the Office of Traffic Safety says 56 pedestrian deaths is an alarming number. He says, “we started to see this real significant uptick in pedestrian and other vulnerable road user fatalities really kind of with the onset of the pandemic and everything that came with that.” Hanson says the lack of snow last winter also increased the number of walkers on Minnesota roads. There were 44 pedestrian deaths in 2023.

(Oakdale, MN) — There is a celebration of life today (Mon 2-7pm) in Oakdale for Sam Nordquist. Police in Upstate New York say the 24-year-old transgender man was tortured for months before his body was found February 13th near Rochester. At least five people face charges in Nordquist’s death. The public is invited to the wake for Sam this afternoon at the Inwood Oaks Event Center. His family is planning a private funeral. Nordquist attended Red Wing High School and had been living in Oakdale.

(Columbia Heights, MN) — Anoka County authorities are investigating a deadly weekend shooting in Columbia Heights. Deputies say a man suffering from a gunshot wound was brought to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale late Friday night and later died. Police say the preliminary investigation indicates the victim was shot on Central Avenue in Columbia Heights. No arrests have been made, and investigators aren’t releasing any other information about the shooting.

(St. Paul, MN) — A flooring business in St. Paul must be demolished after a fire. Crews responded to Fulton Flooring Sunday around 1 p-m. Officials say the fire was so severe a neighboring building was damaged, and firefighters had to stay outside the burning structure. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

(Alexandira, MN) — Authorities in west central Minnesota are warning of deteriorating conditions after a vehicle crashed through the ice on Lake Victoria near Alexandria. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says a towing company was already at the scene Sunday morning when deputies arrived. They say 45-year-old Mark Herrboldt of Rice drove about 20 feet onto the ice before the front end of his truck broke through. No one was injured, and the vehicle was safely removed. The ice ranged from a few feet thick to only 3.5 inches where the ice broke.

(St. Paul, MN) — Minnesota anglers need to remove their fish houses by 11:59 tonight (Mon) from lakes in the southern two-thirds of the state. Many people got their shelters off the ice last week when temperatures reached the 50s. The D-N-R is also reminding everyone to pick up debris from the area where they were ice fishing. Fish houses could be confiscated by conservation officers if the owners don’t get them off the ice. Anglers in the northern third of Minnesota have two more weeks to remove their shelters.

(Phoenix, AZ) — The nearly full-strength Minnesota Timberwolves are celebrating a 116-98 win at the Phoenix Suns. Anthony Edwards returned from a one-game suspension and had a game-high 44 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Julius Randle came off the injured list Sunday night and scored 20 points while Donte DiVincenzo added 24 and six steals in his third game back from a turf toe injury. Center Rudy Gobert missed his seventh straight game due to a sore back. The Wolves are back at Target Center Tuesday night to face the Philadelphia 76ers.
