(St. Paul, MN) — A lawsuit filed by Attorney General Keith Ellison alleges the Trump administration is illegally attempting to withhold 243 million dollars in Medicaid payments to Minnesota. Ellison and the state Department of Human Services are asking the court to issue a temporary restraining order to block what they call this unlawful action. Medicaid provides health insurance to more than a million low-income Minnesotans. Ellison says in a statement, “I will do everything in my power to defend our tax dollars, both from fraudsters and from the Trump administration’s cruelty.”

(Washington, DC) — The Trump administration is going to brief Congress today (Mon) on the airstrikes the U-S and Israel launched against Iran. The attacks have led to a wider conflict in the Middle East. U-S Senator Amy Klobuchar said, “the Administration has still not laid out a strategic plan or path forward. The American people deserve answers.” Senator Tina Smith is pushing for a vote on a war powers resolution, but it’s not expected to pass the Republican-controlled House and Senate. At least six U-S servicemembers have been killed in “Operation Epic Fury.”

(St. Paul, MN) — A bill that would create an Office of Gun Violence Prevention was laid over in an House Health Committee. It got a hearing Monday but no legislative action was taken. The author of the bill, D-F-L Representative Robert Bierman of Apple Valley, says the office would work to research and reduce gun violence, create public health campaigns, and serve as a resource for the full legislature. Gun rights advocates argued the bill could violate Second Amendment Rights. Republicans also said there was a lack of funding for the bill. Bierman said that would be coming in a separate amendment.

(St. Paul, MN) — A bill to protect Minnesotans from people unlawfully posing as a police officer is moving though the Minnesota House. The Transportation Committee passed the bill that would make it illegal to sell a vehicle with any public safety equipment or insignia to the general public. The author of the bill, Representative John Huot of Rosemount said, “All Minnesotans deserve to know that when they call for help, they can trust that a trained public safety officer will respond quickly.” Any violation would subject the seller to a civil penalty of $2500. The bill was referred to the House Public Safety Committee.

(Minneapolis, MN) — A 33-year-old man is sentenced to 28 years in prison for the 2022 shooting death of 15-year-old Deshaun Hill, a standout athlete and honor-roll student at Minneapolis North High School. Cody Fohrenkam pleaded guilty earlier this month to second-degree intentional murder after his previous conviction was overturned by the Minnesota Court of Appeals. Fohrenkam recently admitted to killing Hill, who investigators say was shot after the two briefly interacted on a sidewalk. Surveillance video showed Fohrenkam running from the scene. Hill later died at the hospital.

(Moorhead, MN) — Authorities in Fargo-Moorhead say a man pulled from the Red River by firefighters Monday afternoon did not survive. Witnesses told police the man was seen walking on the ice before he fell into the water. He was recovered from the river around 3:30 p.m. in critical condition and later died in the hospital. The Fargo Fire Department used an inflatable boat to search for the man.

(Pelican Rapids, MN) — An Otter Tail County man is recovering from injuries suffered in a tractor fire on the east side of Lake Lida near Pelican Rapids. Dispatch received a report of a tractor fully engulfed in flames Monday evening. Deputies say the tractor was being used to move brush when it rolled onto its side and ignited from a nearby burn pit. The operator’s leg caught fire and he was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota D-N-R is looking for applicants for its Conservation Officer Prep program, which helps people without law enforcement experience become conservation officers. As part of the process, the D-N-R’s Enforcement Division will hold two virtual open houses with information on conservation officer careers and the hiring process. Both sessions will stream on the division’s Facebook page at noon this Thursday, and noon on Tuesday, March 17th. Applications are open now through March 31st.

(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) is awarding $ 1.9 million to 12 organizations that provide job training and support services for youth and young adults. The funding is expected to help more than 600 young Minnesotans and support affordable housing projects in underserved communities. Youthbuild grantees offer construction training, academic support, mentoring, case management, and job placement for students who have dropped out or are at risk of leaving school and face economic barriers.
