>>Flanagan Kicks Off US Senate Campaign with Stop in St. Louis Park

(St. Louis Park, MN) — Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan kicks off her U-S Senate campaign today (Sat) in St. Louis Park with a statewide ‘Kitchen Table Conversation.’  From groceries to gas, Flanagan says she wants to hear what issues Minnesota families are facing and find solutions.  She’s running for the open seat Democratic U-S  Senator Tina Smith will leave in 2026.  Flanagan also plans to visit Duluth, the Iron Range, and Rochester over the next month.

 

>>Assistant Minnesota House GOP Leader Not Calling for Across the Board Cuts

(St. Paul, MN) — The chairman of the Minnesota House Ways and Means Committee says across the board cuts are not his plan to balance the state budget.  Minnesota is facing a six-billion-dollar deficit by the end of the decade.  G-O-P Representative Paul Torkelson of Hanska says his priorities are to find unspent funds that we can claw back, identify where fraud has happened, and cut state agencies where we can complement of employees. He says it’s time to make Minnesota government the “right size.”  The budget deadline is May 19th and both Republicans and Democrats have vowed to meet that date.

 

>>Winona State University Loses $1.1M Defense Department Grant

(Winona, MN) — Winona State University is losing a one-point-one-million-dollar grant designed to promote civic engagement.  The U-S Department of Defense terminated the award in late February.  The grant was awarded to Winona State last August under the Biden administration.  The university started work this fall with a series of events on Promoting Civility Through Dialogue.  The school also launched an internship program and was planning a speaker series this spring.

 

>>No Foul Play Suspected in Infant Death in Blaine

(Blaine, MN) — Anoka County authorities say they do not suspect foul play in the death of an infant in Blaine.  Police were called to a home Friday morning on a report of a baby girl not breathing.  First responders tried to the save the infant, but she died at the hospital.  Investigators aren’t releasing any other information.

 

>>MPD Searches for Violent Crime Offender from Winona

(Minneapolis, MN) — Minneapolis police are searching for a man with a history of committing violent crimes.  Richard Luers has an active arrest warrant after leaving his registered address in Winona.  Officers say he failed to update his address as a predatory offender for about two months.  Luers has a history of kidnapping.  He’s described as white, 5 feet 10 inches tall, with grey hair and hazel eyes.  If you see him, police ask you to call 9-1-1 immediately.

 

>>Recent Snowfall Welcome in Parts of Southern Minnesota

(St. Paul, MN) — All the snow from the ‘state tournament’ snowstorm this week is good news for farms, rivers and lakes in parts of Minnesota.  Assistant State Climatologist Pete Boulay says many areas need significant snowfall.  He says, “the storm that fell hit an area that was the driest, south central, so southeast Minnesota.  So that storm helped.  And if we get another storm that will help us out a bit, too. “ Some weather models are predicting another snowstorm late next week during the boy’s state basketball tournament.  More than two-thirds of Minnesota is in a moderate drought.

 

>>Championship Games of Boy’s State Hockey Tourney at the X

(St. Paul, MN) — Two state champions will be crowned today (Sat) at the 2025 Minnesota Boy’s State High School Hockey Tournament.  Defending Class A champion St. Cloud Cathedral looks to defend its title against East Grand Forks at noon.  The Crusaders beat Orono 4-1 in the semifinals.  The Green Wave advanced with a 7-5 win over Hibbing-Chisolm-VCA.  Class 2-A champs Edina will not repeat after a 4-3 loss to Moorhead in the semis Friday night.  The Spuds will face Stillwater in 2-A championship game tonight (Sat 7pm).  The Ponies shut out St. Thomas Academy 4-0 in the other semifinal.
