(Lake City, MN) — The 76th Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener kicks off this morning (Fri) in Lake City in the southeast corner of the state. Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan are taking part of several activities today including a community celebration this evening. There will be an opening day launch ceremony Saturday morning before they go fishing on Lake Pepin.
>>Minnesota Senate Passes Straw Purchase Firearms Bill
(St. Paul, MN) — A bill passed by the Minnesota Senate Thursday would increase penalties for those who “straw purchase” firearms for those who legally can’t have them — including a Republican amendment for a 10-year prison sentence if the weapon is used against a peace officer. But Republicans were unsuccessful in getting a ban on “binary triggers” removed from the bill. Maple Grove Senator Warren Limmer says, “the word ‘confiscation’ comes to mind when I hear, turn them over.” Senator Heather Gustafson of Vadnais (VAD-niss) Heights responds there’s a broader benefit to public safety and “he binary trigger has been used in several violent cases recently: Burnsville shooting, the Fargo shooting.” One officer died in Fargo; two officers and a paramedic were killed in Burnsville.

(Mankato, MN) — Fallen Burnsville firefighter-paramedic Adam Finseth posthumously received the Outstanding Alumni Award and an honorary doctorate degree Thursday from the South Central College. Close friend Andy Atwater says he and Adam were prepared to face the world at its worst after they graduated in 2012, but on February 18th, 2024 he was not prepare to hear, “my classmate, my best friend, Brad and Brenda’s son, Amber’s brother, Tara’s husband and Liam and Nora’s papa was shot in killed in the line of duty.” Atwater says Finseth lost his life doing what he loved to do – serving the residents of Burnsville. He accepted the awards on behalf of Finseth’s family during commencement ceremonies.

(Washington, DC) — Three students from Minnesota are among 161 seniors across the nation being recognized as 2024 U-S Presidential Scholars. The Minnesota selections are Ming Wei Yeoh from Minnetonka, Derrick Siu of Edina, and Phillipa Hane Pflaum from Wayzata (WHY’-zet-uh) . The students are honored for accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education fields. The Presidential Scholars Class of 2024 will be recognized during a program this summer.
>>Death of a Man Under Investigation in Waseca
(Waseca, MN) — Authorities in south central Minnesota are investigating the death of a man in Waseca (wah-SEEK’-uh). Police were doing a welfare check Wednesday when they entered a home and found a 64-year-old man dead inside. Officers requested assistance from the Minnesota B-C-A to process the scene. No further information is being released.
>>Cottage Grove Man Sentenced for Fatal Shooting in West St. Paul
(Hastings, MN) — A Cottage Grove man is sentenced to more than ten years in state prison for a deadly 2021 shooting in West St. Paul. Dakota County prosecutors say 25-year-old Brenden Reynolds pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in the death of 20-year-old Jayvon Malone. Police said Reynolds punched Malone in the face at Thompson County Park, sending him to the ground where gunshots were fired. Malone was taken to a hospital where he later died of his injuries. Reyolds received credit for 415 days already served in jail.

(St. Paul, MN) — Minnesota residents are encouraged to participate in the Stamp Out Hunger food collection event this weekend. For 32 years, the National Association of Letter Carriers and the U-S Postal Service have collaborated to gather nearly two billion pounds of non-perishable food items. Tomorrow morning(Sat), people can leave a bag of non-perishable food items near their mailbox for mail carriers to pick up. The collected food will then be delivered to local food shelves across the state.
