>>Walz Lands 3 Northern Pike at Governor’s Fishing Opener in Crosslake

(Crosslake, MN) —  Governor Tim Walz reeled in three northern pike during the Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener in Crosslake.  Walz went fishing with legislative leaders for Saturday’s opener. Walz said, “there’s no better way to kick off summer than by heading out on the water to participate in Minnesota’s number one outdoor activity – fishing.”  The governor thanked the Crosslake community for putting on great event.

 

>>Jett Warns Federal Cuts Could Impact Minnesota’s Most Vulnerable Students

(St. Paul, MN) — Possible education cuts at the federal level could impact Minnesota’s most vulnerable students, according to state officials.  Department of Education Commissioner Willie Jett says the state typically receives over $600 million from the U-S Education Department and that funding goes towards several student groups, including $256 million for those with disabilities and $192 million for those from low-income backgrounds. He says those vulnerable students are on the right track and now is not the time to pull funding.  This comes on the news that the 2024 high school graduation rate was the highest in Minnesota history.

 

>>St. Louis Park Man Found Dead in Boundary Waters Canoe Area

(Ely, MN) — A canoeist from the Twin Cities is the victim of an apparent drowning in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.  The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says the U-S Forest Service located a capsized canoe Saturday afternoon on Iron Lake north of Ely.  Deputies say staff discovered 62-year-old Robert S. James of St. Louis Park and his gear floating near the canoe.  A Forest Service aircraft recovered his body.  Authorities are still investigating the incident.

 

>>Robbinsdale Police Officer Suffers Minor Injuries in Squad Car Crash

(Robbinsdale, MN) — A Robbinsdale police officer is recovering minor injuries suffered in a squad car crash.  Authorities say the fully marked patrol vehicle was struck by a car early Saturday on County Road 81.  Two occupants in that vehicle were taken to North Memorial Health with minor injuries and the officer was treated and released.  The preliminary investigation indicates the squad car was in emergency mode with its lights flashing when it was hit.  The Minnesota State Patrol is looking into the crash.

 

>>Teen Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries in Apple Valley Shooting

(Apple Valley, MN) — A teen is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries suffered in a shooting early Saturday in Apple Valley.  Witnesses told police a group was involved in an altercation in a park when gunshots were fired, and they fled the scene in several vehicles.  Officers say an 18-year-old boy showed up at the police department with a gunshot wound to the face.  He was treated and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.  Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Apple Valley P-D.

 

>>EMS Workers in Detroit Lakes Vote to Unionize

(Detroit Lakes, MN) — Emergency medical staff at Essentia in Detroit Lakes have voted to form a union.  St. Mary’s Essentia Health Medical Service Staff is joining AFSCME Council 65.  E-M-T Logyn Saewart says the vote was an overwhelming majority to join.  As a privately-owned service, he says they don’t get the state funding other departments do.  He says this will help address the labor shortage in his field.  Saewart says better retention and recruitment doesn’t just make his job easier, it also makes for better resources to improve care for patients.

 

>>MPCA Issues Air Quality Alert for Twin Cities, Central and Western Minnesota

(St. Paul, MN) — The Twin Cities metro, western and central Minnesota will be under an air quality alert starting at noon today (Mon) through 9 this evening.  The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) issued the alert saying ground-level ozone is expected to be high during the afternoon and evening.  The air quality is expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups, including people who have asthma or breathing conditions, children and teens, and people working or doing extended physical activity outdoors.

 

>>Timberwolves and Warriors Play Game 4 of West Semifinals at Chase Center

(San Francisco, CA) — The Minnesota Timberwolves take a 2-1 lead into Game 4 of the N-B-A Western Conference Semifinals tonight (Mon 9pm) in San Francisco.  The Wolves beat the Warriors 102-97 on Saturday night at the Chase Center.  Anthony Edwards led Minnesota with 36 points and Julius Randle had a triple double with 24 points, 12 assists and ten rebounds.  Ex-Timberwolf Jimmy Butler scored 33 points for Golden State.  Point guard Steph Curry is still out with a hamstring injury.  The best-of-seven series goes back to Target Center Wednesday for Game 5.

 

>>Twins Walk Off Giants in 10 Innings for 8th Straight Win

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Twins walked off the San Francisco Giants 7-6 in ten innings Sunday for their eighth win in a row and second straight series sweep.  DaShawn Keirsey drove in the winning run with a two-out single as Minnesota improved to 21-and-20.  Starting pitcher Pablo López allowed four runs over six innings and Griffin Jax gave up the game-tying hit in the eighth.  Closer Jhoan Duran picked up the win.  The Twins have an off-day today (Mon) and open a three-game set Tuesday in Baltimore.
