A proposal to suspend House rules and bring the legislation to the floor failed Thursday night on a 67-67 vote. The House adjourned and will not have a session today (Fri). Democrats plan to hold a sit-in until the House gavels in at noon on Saturday. Governor Tim Walz says the parents of Annunciation school shooting victims were promised a vote on the gun violence prevention package and that should still happen. The governor predicted it would pass if the bill comes to the House floor. The measure passed the DFL-controlled Senate by one vote.

(St. Paul, MN) — Longtime Republican state lawmaker Carla Nelson of Rochester is retiring from the Minnesota Senate. Nelson has represented Olmsted and Dodge counties since winning election to the state Senate in 2010. Previously, she was a member of the House beginning in 2003. Nelson’s statement on not seeking re-election mentions her dedication to education, tax relief and working for her constituents. Before she was a legislator, Nelson was a teacher in elementary and middle schools in Rochester and Iowa.

(Washington, DC) — Minnesota’s congressional delegation helped pass the bill in the U-S House allowing year-round E-15 sales. Brian Werner of the Minnesota Biofuels Association says every member voted for it, from co-sponsors Brad Finstad, Angie Craig, and Michelle Fischbach to House Majority Whip Tom Emmer and Ilhan Omar of Minneapolis. He says the E-15 legislation is a win-win for consumers at the gas pump and corn farmers. An outdated E-P-A rule prevents nationwide E-15 sales between June and mid-September. The bill now heads to the U-S Senate.

(Moorhead, MN) — White Earth Nation is moving ahead with plans to build a casino and resort in Moorhead. A newly released economic and social impact study estimates construction of the project along Interstate 94 and Highway 336 would cost nearly 177 million dollars. Plans call for a casino with 950 gaming machines and 10 table games, along with a 200-room hotel, ballroom, restaurants, and parking facilities. The study says the project would create nearly 400 construction jobs and employ about 700 permanent workers once completed. Tribal leaders say the casino could attract more than one million visitors annually and provide major economic benefits for Clay County and the state. The proposal still requires federal and state approval.

(Duluth, MN) — Police in Duluth say a 17-year-old boy is in custody in connection with a shooting Saturday night that wounded a 46-year-old man. Officers say they worked with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin to the arrest the teen Thursday near the Town of Gordon. He’s accused of shooting the victim in downtown Duluth following an argument. The man was taken to the hospital with extensive injuries. The suspect is expected to face attempted second-degree murder and firearms charges.

(Arlington, TX) — The Minnesota Lynx are celebrating a 90-86 win over the Dallas Wings Thursday night in Texas. Minnesota outscored Dallas 50-38 in the second half. Natasha Howard led the Lynx with 26 points, Courtney Williams scored 21, and rookie Olivia Miles had 15 points and six assists. Paige Bueckers from Hopkins had a game-high 27 points and eight assists for the Wings. The Lynx are back at Target Center Sunday to play the Chicago Sky.
