>>Governor Walz Responds to Republican Cuts in Washington

(St. Paul, MN) — Governor Tim Walz is responding to the cuts coming from House Republicans in Washington.  The statement says Minnesota would lose $500 million annually from Medicaid, more than $100 million in tax credits for MNsure enrollees, and $244 million annually in food support.  Governor Walz says, “Republicans in Congress are taking away Americans ability to go to the doctor and put food on the table in order to give tax cuts to billionaires.”  The Democratic governor goes on to say that the state will not be able to make up for these federal losses.

 

>>Cannabis Advocates Protest Tax Increase at State Capitol

(St. Paul, MN) — A few dozen protesters gathered outside the governor’s office Wednesday to voice their opposition to the proposed tax increase on cannabis products.  Advocate Leili Fatehi says this tax hike would happen before the adult-use cannabis industry even opens for business.  She said, “this proposed tax increase is a betrayal of what was promised to this industry.”  Fatehi says she hopes that legislative leaders and the governor hear us and find somewhere else to make up their budget shortfall.  The budget agreement between Governor Walz and legislative leaders would increase the cannabis tax from ten to 15 percent.

 

>>Police in Coon Rapids Fatally Shoot Man Armed with Knife

(Coon Rapids, MN) — The Minnesota B-C-A is investigating a police shooting in Coon Rapids that left a man armed with a knife dead.  Officers were called to a domestic incident Wednesday afternoon after a woman reported she had been cut with a knife.  Authorities contacted the suspect and heard a woman screaming who left the home with another man.  Investigators say the suspect retreated further into the house and refused repeated commands to drop his weapon.  Two officers discharged less than lethal rounds before a third officer fired a gun, and fourth officer used a Taser when he attempted to get up.  The suspect was treated at the scene and later died in the hospital.  Officer body cameras recorded the incident.

 

>>Woman Rescued from Sleepy Eye House Fire Dies in Hospital

(Sleepy Eye, MN) — Authorities say the woman rescued from a house fire in Sleepy Eye on May 8th did not survive.  The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office told police that 29-year-old Katie Rehbein died Tuesday night in the hospital. Rehbein and her three-year-old son were hospitalized in critical condition.  Four other people in the home were sent to the hospital.  Investigators have ruled out foul play in the fire.

 

>>Price Hikes Are a ‘Last Resort’ for Target

(Minneapolis, MN) — Minnesota-based Target says raising prices will be a last resort for offsetting tariffs.  This comment comes despite the company reporting weaker-than-expected sales in its first quarter.  According to Target’s CEO Brian Cornell, the company has “many levers to use in mitigating the impact of tariffs.”  Major retailers seem to be proceeding cautiously regarding the possibility of price increases.

 

>>Minneapolis Among Best Places to Start Career

(Minneapolis, MN) — Minneapolis is among the best places for new graduates to start working.  Finance website WalletHub recently rated the top 182 cities to start a career based on several key livability and market strength measures.  That includes the availability of new jobs, housing affordability, and more.  Minneapolis was the top city in the state and ranked 11 overall, receiving high marks in the quality of life category.  St. Paul was the other city to make the list, ranking 60th.

 

>>Minnesota Lynx Hold Off Dallas Wings in Home Opener at Target Center

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Minnesota Lynx improved to 3-and-0 with an 85-81 win over the Dallas Wings in the home opener last night at Target Center.  The Lynx led by two with under a minute left in regulation before Napheesa Collier iced the game with a pair of free throws.  Collier finished with 28 points and eight rebounds and Alanna Smith and Courtney William both scored 13 for Minnesota.  Hopkins native Paige Bueckers had 12 points and ten assists for the 0-and-3 Wings.  The Lynx host Connecticut tomorrow night (Fri 6:30pm) in Minneapolis.

 

>>Wolves and Thunder Play Game 2 of Western Conference Finals in OKC

(Oklahoma City, OK) — The Timberwolves will try to even the Western Conference Finals when they play the Thunder tonight (Thurs 7:30pm) in Game 2 at Oklahoma City.  O-K-C rallied past the Wolves 114-88 in the series opener Tuesday night at Paycom Center.  All-Star guard Anthony Edwards was fined 50 thousand dollars for using profane language during a postgame interview. Ant told reporters, “I’ve definitely got to shoot more. I only took 13 (expletive) shots.”  Edwards had 18 points in the Game 1 loss and Julius Randle finished with 28 but only scored eight in the second half.  The best-of-seven series moves to Target Center Saturday for Game 3.
