>>Hundreds Attend Memorial Day Ceremony at Fort Snelling National Cemetery

(Fort Snelling, MN) — Hundreds gathered at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Monday for this year’s Memorial Day Ceremony.  Governor Tim Walz said budgets that fund veterans and the Minnesota National Guard are always a top priority for the legislature.  Walz says for the past four years in a near unanimous vote, the first things that leave the Minnesota Capitol were laws that fully fund our veterans homes, the state veterans cemeteries and the National Guard’s enlistment bonuses.  Walz said we get to speak our minds and have a difference of opinion because of the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice.  Volunteers placed nearly 200 thousand flags at the graves of the fallen servicemembers at Fort Snelling.

 

>>President Trump Honors Minnesota Airman Killed in Vietnam in Memorial Day Address

(Arlington, VA) — President Donald Trump honored a Minnesota airman killed in the Vietnam War during his national Memorial Day address at Arlington National Cemetery.  Senior Master Sergeant Elroy Harworth died in May 1966 after his plane was shot down during a classified bombing mission.  President Trump said, “Elroy was just 24 years old when he gave his life for America, leaving behind a beautiful young wife who was seven months pregnant. That meant Elroy would never know the joy of meeting his son Troy or seeing him grow.”  Troy Harworth is now a 1st Class U-S Army sergeant.  Troy, his wife Sonia, their son John, and their grandson Elroy attended the ceremony in his honor.

 

>>Walz and Legislative Leaders Hope for Quick Special Session

(St. Paul, MN) — Governor Walz and legislative leaders say when the special session is called, they hope the proceedings will be quick.  But that will require cooperation from the rest of the legislative body.  D-F-L Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy says there will be no amendments to the budget agreement and their job now is to pass it through and make it law.  Murphy believes the special session can be a quick one if lawmakers work together to finish the budget.  Leaders says it would be ideal for the special session to finish before June 1st.

 

>>Craig to Speak Out Against Plans to Eliminate Head Start Funding

(Rosemount, MN) — Congresswoman Angie Craig is speaking out today (Tues 10:30am) against the Trump administration’s plans to eliminate funding for Head Start.  Craig will appear at a news conference in Lakeville with Head Start administrators, teachers, parents and students.  The National Head Start Association says more than one million parents who use Head Start and Early Start centers would lose necessary child care under the proposal.  Craig’s office says more than 12 thousand students attended 33 Head Start and Early Head Start Centers in Minnesota last year.

 

>>Man Jailed for Assaulting St. Louis County Sheriff’s Deputy in Rice Lake

(Rice Lake, MN) — St. Louis County authorities say a man is jailed for assaulting a sheriff’s deputy and fleeing into a 30-foot tall tree in Rice Lake.  Investigators say the deputy was responding to the report of a suspicious male Sunday when the suspect assaulted and strangled the deputy.  The man climbed up a tree and negotiated with law enforcement for four hours before coming down.  The deputy was treated and released from the hospital.  The suspect was booked in the St. Louis County jail.

 

>>Moorhead Woman Could Face 2nd Degree Murder Charges in Son’s Death

(Fargo, ND) — A Moorhead woman is expected to be charged with second-degree murder in the suspicious death of her 20-month-old son.  Police say 32-year-old Valerie Zamora was arrested Friday in Fargo and jailed pending extradition back to Minnesota.  Investigators say Jesus Zamora died May 15th at Sanford Hospital and the Ramsey County medical examiner ruled it was a homicide.

 

>>Fillmore County Authorities Investigating Deadly House Fire

(LeRoy, MN) — Authorities in southeastern Minnesota are investigating a deadly house fire near LeRoy.  The Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office says crews were called to the fire early Saturday.  Officials say a 90-year-old man died at the scene and woman in the home was taken to a Rochester hospital.  The victims haven’t been identified and there’s no word on the cause of the fire.

 

>>Lakeville Home Total Loss After Garage Fire

(Lakeville, MN) — A Lakeville home is a total loss after a fire on Memorial Day.  Crews responded to the scene around noon, finding a garage in flames that extended to the house.  The homeowner and their dog were able to escape uninjured.  The Red Cross is helping the displaced owner.  The cause of the fire is unknown.

 

>>Bear Country in Minnesota Continues to Expand

(Undated) — Bear encounters are becoming more common in Minnesota as bear country has expanded.  D-N-R Bear Project Leader Andrew Tri says all of Minnesota is now considered bear country, with sightings ranging from the Twin Cities and the southeastern part of the state to the Dakota borders.  Tri says the reasons for increase in encounters include human expansion, better habitats, and less people hunting them.  He says you can help the D-N-R track bear country by reporting any sighting on their website.

 

>>Wolves Fall to Thunder in Game 4 of Western Conference Finals at Home

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Timberwolves now trail the Thunder 3-1 in the Western Conference Finals following a 128-126 loss in Game 4 Monday night at Target Center.  Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a game-high 40 points and Jalen Williams scored 34 for Oklahoma City.  Nickeil Alexander-Walker led Minnesota with 23 points, Jaden McDaniels scored 22, and Donte DiVincenzo added 21 points.  Game 5 on Wednesday night in O-K-C is a must-win for the Wolves.

 

>>Minnesota Frost Top Ottawa in OT to Win 2nd Straight PWHL Championship

(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota Frost are celebrating their second consecutive Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) Walter Cup championship.  Minnesota topped the Ottawa Charge 2-1 in overtime last night on a game-winning goal by Mound native Liz Schepers.  The Frost won three straight games to clinch the best-of-five series.  Goaltender Maddie Rooney of Andover made 33 saves to help Minnesota win their second P-W-H-L title.
