>>Minnesota is #1 for Voter Turnout in 2024 Election

(Minneapolis, MN)  —  It looks Minnesota may have the highest voter turnout for the second straight presidential election.  Secretary of State Steve Simon said the 2024 preliminary results as of Monday show that we are still first place in the nation once again for voter turnout.  Simon cautioned that could change because there’s still a few more ballots left to count in the state of Wisconsin.  He added that we won’t know the final result for a couple weeks.  Turnout was just over 76.35 percent in Minnesota.  Simon says there are many reasons for our high turnout including same-day registration and a “pro-voting” culture in the state.

 

>>Organic Carrots Blamed for E Coli Infections in 5 Minnesotans

(St. Paul, MN)  —  The Minnesota Department of Health is warning Minnesotans of an E. coli outbreak.   Epidemiologist Carlota Medus says you should dispose of recalled organic carrots.  She says it’s called E. coli O121 and we have five cases in Minnesotans who ate organic carrots, and those carrots got recalled.  The illnesses have been linked to carrots purchased from Costco, Target and Hy-Vee, and brands have included Good and Gather, Bunny Luv and Cal-Organic.

 

>>Minnesota Ranks in Top 10 for Lung Cancer Survival Rate

(Duluth, MN) —  The latest “State of Lung Cancer” report shows Minnesota ranks in the top ten in the country when it comes to lung cancer survival after diagnosis.  But American Lung Association spokeswoman Pat McKone says there is still work to be done.  She says one of the disparities is in our Native populations for both scanning and early diagnosis and treatment.  She says we can also improve biomarker testing which can help influence treatment options because not all lung cancers are the same.  Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U-S and Minnesota.

 

>>Flu Season Off to Slow Start in Minnesota

(St. Paul, MN)  —  The flu season is off to a slow start in Minnesota this fall.  State Department of Health Epidemiologist Jeff Sanders says we had a prolonged season last year.  He says so far, we are little bit behind last year, but we expect to see respiratory virus activity increasing in the coming weeks.  Sanders says now is a good time to get vaccinated going into the holidays.  There have been 22 flu-related hospitalizations and two school outbreaks this season in Minnesota.

 

>>Red Wing Murder Suspect Makes First Court Appearance on Tuesday

(Red Wing, MN)  —  A 41-year-old man is expected to be charged with second-degree murder today (Tues) in the death of his girlfriend Sunday night in Red Wing.  Police were called to the report of a suicidal man with a gun and negotiated with him for hours until he came out of the duplex.  Officers went inside the residence and found a woman dead.  The suspect was booked in the Goodhue County jail and makes his first court appearance today.  Authorities haven’t identified the victim.

 

>>Son Charged in Fatal Shooting of Father on Pine County Hunting Trip

(Hinckley, MN)  —  A Cambridge man is charged with fatally shooting his father during a hunting trip Friday in Pine County.  Prosecutors say Kirk Edward Hazlett III is facing second-degree murder, kidnapping, and burglary for the killing of Kirk Edward Hazlett II.  Investigators say Kirk Hazlett shot his father several times at a cabin near Hinckley and was later arrested at his home in Cambridge.  Witnesses told authorities the father and son had a strained relationship for a long time.

 

>>Authorities ID Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Vehicle in Maplewood

(Maplewood, MN)  —  The Minnesota State Patrol is identifying the pedestrian fatally struck by a vehicle Monday morning in Maplewood.  Troopers say 17-year-old Heriberto Severino-Luna of Maplewood was walking on Highway 61 near Highway 36 when he was hit by an S-U-V.  Severino-Luna died at the scene.  The report says the S-U-V driver wasn’t hurt and alcohol wasn’t involved.  The roadway was dry at the time of the crash.

 

>>Victim of Frogtown Shooting Dies from Injuries in St. Paul Hospital

(St. Paul, MN)  —  Authorities say a St. Paul man has died from injuries suffered in a Frogtown shooting on November 5th.  Police found 24-year-old Dejuan Hemphill with a gunshot wound to the head.  Hemphill was taken to Regions Hospital where he died Friday.  Hemphill’s death is now being investigating as a homicide.  No arrests have been made.
