(Minneapolis, MN) — The Minnesota 100 Club is providing a 50-thousand-dollar contribution to the family of fallen Voyageurs National Park Ranger Kevin Grossheim. Executive director Julie Gotham says Grossheim’s family could use some financial help during this difficult time. She says his loss is devastating for the first responder community and by all accounts he was an incredible man. Grossheim was a ranger at Voyageurs for 23 years and served 19 years as a volunteer firefighter. The National Park Service said Grossheim saved three boaters in rough waters on Sunday before his rescue boat capsized.

(St. Paul, MN) — Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will be campaigning in the battleground states of Michigan and Wisconsin over the next few days. The Harris-Walz campaign says the Democratic vice presidential candidate will arrive at the Wayne County Airport in Detroit later this morning and then speak at an event in Macomb County (Fri 11am). On Monday, Walz is scheduled to visit Eau Claire in the morning and attend an afternoon event in Green Bay. Former President Donald Trump campaigned in Juneau on Sunday, the G-O-P presidential nominee’s fourth stop in Wisconsin in eight days.

(Undated) — Governor Walz is back in Minnesota this weekend to attend the annual Mankato East-Mankato West high school football game and participate in the Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener. Walz will cheer on the Scarlets tonight (Friday) and give the team a pep talk before the game. It’s been 25 years since Mankato West won the state championship with Walz as an assistant coach. Tomorrow (Sat), Walz will go out for an early hunt in Sleepy Eye to mark the start of the pheasant season.

(Mankato, MN) — Delays are being reported as jury selection continues in the Adam Fravel murder trial in Mankato. Six jurors had been selected as of Thursday afternoon in Blue Earth County. Due to lengthy juror interviews, the judge now says that opening arguments will likely happen on October 16th instead of Monday. Fravel is facing first- and second-degree murder charges in connection with the disappearance and death of Madeline Kingsbury of Winona last year. Maddie was his ex-girlfriend and mother of their two children.

(St. Paul, MN) — Preliminary numbers show an eight percent decline in fatal drug overdoses in Minnesota in 2023. Department of Health Epidemiologist Mary Delaquil says, “we had a leveling off last year and I am hopeful that even though the numbers may change slightly when everything is said and done, we should still be seeing a decrease.” Greater Minnesota experienced a 21 percent decrease in overdose deaths while the seven-county metro area saw a one percent drop. She says increased education, awareness, and access to resources and Narcan could all be reasons for the decrease.

(Undated) — There are new burning restrictions today (Fri) for two more counties in northeastern Minnesota where the fire danger has increased. The D-N-R says burning permits will not be issued for Koochiching and the northern St. Louis counties. Campfires are only allowed in established fire rings, and fireworks are prohibited on public and private land outside city limits. Campfires are also now restricted in all the Superior National Forest. Burning restrictions went into effect last week in Lake and Cook counties in the Arrowhead. Forty-nine percent of Minnesota is in a moderate drought.

(Brooklyn, NY) — The Minnesota Lynx stormed back from an 18-point deficit to top the New York Liberty 95-93 in overtime of Game One of the W-N-B-A Finals in Brooklyn. All-Star forward Napheesa Collier made the go-ahead shot with eight seconds remaining in O-T. Collier finished with 21 points, eight rebounds, three steals and six blocks. Courtney Williams scored 23 and Kayla McBride had 22 points. Williams completed a four-point play late in the fourth quarter that kept Minnesota alive. Game 2 is Sunday afternoon at the Barclays Center.

(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota Wild are celebrating a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets in the season opener at the Xcel Energy Center. Joel Eriksson Ek, Mats Zuccarello and Matt Boldy scored for Minnesota last night(Thurs). Goaltender Filip Gustavsson made 30 saves for the win. Former Wild coach Dean Evason (EV’-uh-son) made his debut on the bench for Columbus. The Seattle Kraken visit St. Paul on Saturday night.
