>>Congresswoman Craig Calls on President to Send Relief to Minnesota Farmers

(Washington, DC) – Congresswoman, and ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee, Angie Craig is calling on President Trump to roll back his tariffs to provide relief to Minnesota soybean farmers.  In a letter to Trump, Craig pointed out the negative impacts his trade policies are having on soybean farmers, and called out his recent bailout to Argentina, one of the country’s largest competitors in growing soybeans.  Soybeans are the number one agricultural crop produced by Minnesota farmers, but China is no longer purchasing them due to U-S tariffs.

 

>>Federal Shutdown Impacting Energy Assistance Program in Minnesota

(St. Paul, MN) — The federal government shutdown is impacting a crucial program in Minnesota that helps residents pay their heating bills.  Lissa Pawlisch with the Minnesota Department of Commerce says the Energy Assistance program doesn’t have the federal funding the state needs to start issuing payments on behalf of households.  She says in any given year the program helps about 125,000 households keep their heat on during the winter.  Pawlisch says despite the shutdown, Minnesotans should still apply for the program if they need to use it.  There’s more information on the Department of Commerce website.

 

>>Survey Finds Minnesota Hospitality Businesses Struggled this Summer

(Minneapolis, MN) — A new survey by Hospitality Minnesota and the Minneapolis Federal Reserve shows it was a tough summer for hotels, restaurants, and related businesses.  Fed regional analyst Haley Chinander says from May through August, 53 three percent of businesses saw declines in profits, 42 percent saw revenue declines, and 47 percent reported customer traffic was down.  The 135 Minnesota business owners surveyed said rising prices and labor costs as their top two challenges.  Some also pointed to changes in trade policy and tariffs.

 

>>Uncertainty During Head Start Awareness Month in Minnesota

(Sauk Rapids, MN) — October is Head Start Awareness Month, highlighting a program that offers child and family services to low-income families to promote school readiness and success.  Minnesota Head Start Association Executive Director Kraig Gratke says they receive 80 percent of funding from the federal government and parents are worried about surviving without the aid.  He says, “they’re concerned about food and health care, kind of all of those things, and at Head Start, we know that those are important.”  Gratke adds that their offices are operating at 60 percent of staff due to federal cuts.

 

>>Itasca County Woman Pleads Guilty to Trying to Vote for Dead Mother

(Grand Rapids, MN) — A woman from Itasca County is pleading guilty to trying to vote for her dead mother in the November 2024 election.  Prosecutors say 51-year-old Danielle Miller of Nashwauk entered a Norgaard plea to one felony count and two other charges were dismissed.  The Itasca County Auditor’s Office says it received signed ballots from Miller and her mother, Rose Javorina, last October but Javorina died on August 31st before ballots could be filled out.  Miller admitted her mother was avid Donald Trump supporter and she wanted to vote for him.  The judge ordered her to read a book about the importance of voting in a democracy and write a ten-page essay, pay an 885-dollar fine, and serve three years of probation.

 

>>Chisholm Man Sentenced Again in 1986 Cold Case Murder

(Chisholm, MN) — A 57-year-old Chisholm man is again sentenced to life in prison for the 1986 rape and murder of Nancy Daugherty.  A second jury found Michael Allen Carbo, Junior guilty after his first conviction was overturned by the Minnesota Supreme Court.  He was originally found guilty in 2022 before appealing, and the decision was reversed in 2024.  D-N-A evidence linked Carbo to the crime scene, and despite presenting alternative-perpetrator claims, the jury reaffirmed his guilt.  St. Louis County officials say the sentence brings long-awaited justice for Daugherty’s family.

 

>>University of Minnesota Football Hosting #25 Nebraska on Friday Night

(Minneapolis, MN) — The University of Minnesota football team is playing 25th ranked Nebraska tonight (Fri 7pm) in a Big Ten matchup at Huntington Bank Stadium.  The Gophers improved to 4-and-2 with a 27-20 win over Purdue on homecoming on Saturday night.  The 5-and-1 Huskers are coming off a 34-31 comeback victory at Maryland.  Minnesota has won five straight over Nebraska including a 13-10 win in 2023 on the U of M campus.
