(International Falls, MN) — The National Park Service is mourning the loss of a ranger who died saving three people from rough waters in Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota. Investigators say the ranger responded to a call for help on Namakan Lake Sunday morning and was towing a group’s distressed vessel when his boat capsized. The ranger and three people he was helping were thrown into the water. The three civilians swam to shore, but the ranger never made it. Officers say his body was recovered from the lake following a three-hour search. The ranger hasn’t been identified.

(Mankato, MN) — Jury selection begins today (Mon 1:30pm) in Mankato for the man accused of killing Madeline Kingsbury of Winona. Adam Fravel is facing first- and second-degree murder charges in the March 2023 disappearance and death of Kingsbury. A judge granted a request from Fravel’s lawyers to move the trial out of Winona County due to pre-trial publicity. Prosecutors expect it to take three to four days to pick the jury in Blue Earth County. More than 150 witnesses have been identified by both sides.

(Chanhassen, MN) — The National Weather Service will no longer be issuing “wind chill” watches, warnings or advisories. Meteorologist Joe Calderone in Chanhassen says this winter those messages are being renamed an “extreme cold” watch, an extreme cold warning, and a cold weather advisory. He says the new terms focus on what you’re going to be feeling when you’re outside regardless of if the wind does exacerbate it or not. Calderone says extreme cold can cause hypothermia and frostbite even on calm winter days. He says the weather forecasts will still include wind chill readings.

(Mankato, MN) — The Dam Store re-opens at a temporary location in downtown Mankato today (Mon) more than three months after the old diner was demolished. Co-owner David Hruska says people are excited about the new restaurant and he expects it stay “pretty busy” for the first few weeks. The iconic diner was demolished by the county following the partial failure of the nearby Rapidan Dam. The flooding also caused the Hruska family home to fall into the Blue Earth River. He says people come from all over for their homemade pie and to experience the old-fashioned feel of The Dam Store.

(Red Lake, MN) — Authorities on the Red Lake Indian Reservation are investigating an explosion that destroyed a home and damaged others. The Red Lake Police Department says one person was inside the house Friday and the injured resident was taken to the hospital in stable condition. The American Red Cross is assisting affected families. No word yet on what caused the explosion. Officials say the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) have been notified.

(La Crescent, MN) — Seventeen assisted living residents are displaced after a fire at a long-term care facility in southeast Minnesota. La Crescent Fire responded to the report around 3:30 pm Saturday. Firefighters say flames spread through the entire building 20 minutes after arrival. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains unknown. The American Red Cross, the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of La Crescent and Ready Bus Line are assisting the displaced residents.

(Minnetonka, MN) — Investigators say alcohol was a factor in a motorcycle crash Saturday night in Minnetonka that left a man from Becker dead. The Minnesota State Patrol says a cycle driven by 58-year-old Garrett Dawson was westbound on Highway 12 when it struck a concrete curb. Troopers say Dawson and his passenger, 58-year-old Melissa Varner of Buffalo, were thrown from the bike. Dawson died at the scene and Varner was taken to North Memorial with non-life threatening injuries. The report indicates that alcohol was involved.

(Minneapolis, MN) — A seven-year-old boy is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle while skateboarding in Minneapolis. Police found the boy injured in the Cleveland Park area around 8 p-m Saturday. The victim was brought to Hennepin Healthcare. His identity and current condition are unknown. The suspect fled the scene before police arrived. No arrests have been made.

(London, UK) — The Minnesota Vikings moved to 5-and-0 with a 23-17 win over the New York Jets Sunday in London. The Purple took a 17-0 lead in the second quarter but needed a pair of field goals in the second half to hold off a late Jets rally. Ex-Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw three interceptions for New York including the game-sealing pick by Stephon Gilmore with 45 seconds remaining. Andrew Van Ginkel returned a Rodgers’ interception for a 63-yard touchdown and fullback C-J Ham scored on a two-yard run. Minnesota has a bye this Sunday.

The Sun outscored the Lynx by 17 points in the second half on their home floor. Napheesa Collier had 29 points and 13 rebounds for Minnesota and Natiesha Hiedeman added 16 off the bench. The team says tickets are still available for Tuesday night’s elimination game. The winner faces the New York Liberty in the W-N-B-A Finals on Thursday.
