(St. Paul, MN) — Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump meet on the debate stage tonight (Tues 8pm) for the first time of the 2024 presidential campaign. Hamline University Professor David Schultz says some of the questions going into the event: “Is Trump going to stay on the issues? Is Harris going to try to provoke Trump to get off the issues?” Schultz doesn’t expect to hear specifics about ways to improve the economy, illegal immigration, or health care. He thinks Harris and Trump will stick to several main talking points. He says analysts will be watching closely to see who makes a gaff on stage.

(Washington, DC) — The majority whip in the U-S House is confident a new farm bill will be completed by the end of the year. Republican Congressman Tom Emmer of Minnesota says the House Ag Committee chair is ready to bring his version to the House floor. Emmer says if Congress can pass a continuing resolution by the end of this month, it would give farm bill negotiators time during the lame duck session. Emmer accuses the U-S Senate Ag Committee chair of being unwilling to work with House Ag Committee leadership. He says one of the major sticking points is using money earmarked for green energy programs to help fund provisions in the House G-O-P farm bill.
>>FEMA Closing Disaster Recovery Centers in Albert Lea, Worthington
(Albert Lea, MN) — The Federal Emergency Management Agency is starting to close its disaster recovery centers in southern Minnesota. Centers began opening last month in areas affected by severe weather and flooding in June and July. FEMA plans to close its disaster centers in Albert Lea and Worthington tomorrow (Wed). The agency has not announced the closing date for its centers in Mankato, Waterville, and Virginia.

(St. Paul, MN) — The push to expand Amtrak’s new Borealis passenger rail line across Minnesota is gaining steam. Brian Nelson with All Aboard Minnesota says there is a lot of support to expand daytime passenger service to the west on the current Empire Builder route through St. Cloud to Fargo. Nelson says the B-N-S-F tracks and infrastructure along that corridor are in “excellent” shape. Amtrak launched the Borealis rail line between St. Paul and Chicago in May and had more than 18-thousand-500 passengers in the first month.

(Minneapolis, MN) — The Minnesota B-C-A is naming the armed man shot by a police officer early Saturday in south Minneapolis. Officials say 40-year-old Nathan Matz remains hospitalized in stable condition and is expected to survive. Agents say Sergeant Ben Bauer discharged his rifle, striking Matz in the jaw. Officers were called to the report of a man firing a rifle at an apartment building and located Matz in a stairwell with an AK-47 in his hand. That when he was shot by Sergeant Bauer. Investigators say there was gunshot damage in the apartment and to homes and vehicles outside the building. No other injuries are reported.

(Detroit Lakes, MN) — A man from rural Frazee in northwest Minnesota is the victim of a deadly crash Monday east of Detroit Lakes. The Becker County Sheriff’s Office says an S-U-V driven by 74-year-old Matthew Mess went into the ditch on County Road 56, rolled and struck a power pole. Deputies say they found Mess dead inside his vehicle. Investigators are trying to determine what led to the crash.

(Minneapolis, MN) — A 27-year-old man is dead after collapsing during a half-marathon Sunday in Minneapolis. Police say it happened near Bde Maka Ska Parkway as the man was running in the City of Lakes Half Marathon. The man was brought to Abbot Northwestern Hospital where he later died. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to identify the man and his cause of death.

(Pierce County, WI) — Authorities say a man from Cottage Grove, Minnesota died while diving off a pontoon Sunday in a Wisconsin State Park. Pierce County deputies were called to Kinnickinnic State Park in Clifton Township on a report of a drowning. Officials learned 66-year-old Keith Taylor had jumped off a diving board into the water and failed to resurface. Friends and family pulled Taylor to shore. Despite life-saving efforts, he died at the scene.
