>>Inauguration Day for New University of Minnesota President Cunningham

(Minneapolis, MN) — New President Rebecca Cunningham will officially be welcomed to the University of Minnesota today (Wed 3pm) during the inauguration ceremony at the Northrop Auditorium.  Cunningham is moderating a special panel discussion at 11 am on the unique role public research universities play.   A celebration is planned after the inauguration ceremony along the Northrop Mall with live entertainment, food and refreshments, and outdoor activities. Cunningham came to Minnesota after serving as the University of Michigan’s vice president for research and innovation.

 

>>Republican VP Candidate Vance Rallies Supporters in Eau Claire

(Eau Claire, WI) — Trump supporters from Minnesota attended the J-D Vance rally Tuesday afternoon in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  The Republican vice presidential candidate told the crowd, “Wisconsin is one of the most important states in the country, and this is one of the most important parts of the state of Wisconsin.”  Senator Vance warned, “unless we elect Donald J. Trump, the open borders are going to continue, the high prices are gonna continue, the economic stagnation is gonna continue, and our country is not gonna be safe. ”  During a rally last night in North Carolina, Governor Tim Walz accused former President Trump and Vance of spreading, “vicious, hurtful lies” about immigrants.  Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to attend an event Friday in Madison, Wisconsin.

 

>>Walz Administration Reminds Storm Victims of Disaster Assistance Deadline

(St. Paul, MN) — The Walz administration is reminding Minnesotans affected by severe storms and flooding that September 27th is the deadline to apply for federal disaster assistance.  Homeowners and renters in 19 Minnesota counties are eligible for grants and funding through FEMA.  The assistance can help pay for repairs, replacement of damaged property, and housing.  The deadline applies to storm victims in Blue Earth, Cook, Cottonwood, Faribault, Freeborn, Goodhue, Itasca, Jackson, Lake, Le Sueur, Mower, Nicollet, Nobles, Rice, Rock, St. Louis, Steele, Waseca, and Watonwan counties.

 

>>MnDOT Urges Drivers to Share Roads with Farm Equipment

(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota Department of Transportation is urging safety on the roads as the fall harvest season approaches.  MnDOT Assistant District Engineer Scott Morgan says farm equipment operators should allow the other folks on the road some more time and more space for the automobile drivers.  He reminds drivers to slow down and use caution when approaching farm equipment and be patient and wait for a safe place to pass.  State data show there were 446 crashes involving farm equipment in Minnesota from 2021 through 2023, resulting in 171 injuries and eight deaths.

 

>>Duluth Man Pleads Guilty to Girlfriend’s Strangulation Death

(Duluth, MN) — A Duluth man will spend 20 years in prison for the March strangulation death of his girlfriend under a plea deal with prosecutors.  Twenty-five-year-old Dale John Howard pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of 27-year-old Allisa Vollan on Tuesday.  The St. Louis County Attorney’s Office says Howard agreed to a 240-month sentence because Vollan had an active domestic abuse no-contact order against him.  The presumptive state sentence for second-degree murder by strangulation is 150 months or 12-and-a-half years in prison.

 

>>Babbitt Man Found Dead at Scene of ATV Crash on Iron Range

(Babbitt, MN) — Authorities on the Iron Range are investigating a weekend A-T-V crash that left a man dead.  The Babbitt Police Department said a passerby discovered the accident scene Sunday morning on the Stony Spur A-T-V trail.  Responding officers determined the A-T-V driver had been dead for some time. They think the rollover crash might have happened Saturday night.  The victim has been identified as 33-year-old Brody Horn of Babbitt.

 

>>Lynx Top Sun for 7th Straight Win, Secure #2 Seed in WNBA Playoffs

(Uncasville, CT) — The Minnesota Lynx topped the Connecticut Sun 78-76 on the road Tuesday night for their seventh straight victory.  Bridget Carleton hit the game-winning three-pointer with just over three seconds remaining and finished with 13 points.  Napheesa Collier led Minnesota with 25 and Courtney Williams added eight points and a season-high 12 assists.  The 30-and-9 Lynx secured the number two seed in the W-B-N-A playoffs and will face Phoenix in the first round.  The L-A Sparks visit Target Center Thursday night.
