Despite renewed urgency after the Annunciation School shooting and the assassination of State Representative Melissa Hortman, Republican lawmakers remain opposed to banning assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines. Walz wants to call special legislative session to advance his proposals, but passage would require bipartisan support which looks unlikely. Some Democrats now say Walz shouldn’t call a special session unless a deal is within reach.

(Minneapolis, MN) — An 18-year-old man is facing multiple charges following a September 18th shooting incident on the University of Minnesota campus. The charges include reckless discharge of a firearm, threats of violence, and carrying a pistol without a permit. Police responded to reports of gunfire outside Rapson Hall last Thursday. Officers recovered two 10-millimeter shell casings on the sidewalk near the scene. No injuries were reported, but the situation prompted the evacuation of around 300 people from the building.

(Red Lodge, MT) — Authorities in Montana say the body of a missing hiker from Minnesota has been recovered in Carbon County. Red Lodge Fire and Rescue reports 23-year-old Tim Sandford from Minnetonka was swept into East Rosebud Creek on June 8th. Officials say Sandford’s body was located 15 hundred feet downstream by search teams using an aerial drone. Red Lodge Fire Rescue Chief Tom Kuntz said in a statement, “After more than three months of dedicated search operations and hundreds of hours of volunteer time, we are grateful to finally be able to bring Tim home to his family.”

(St. Cloud, MN) — Police are identifying the woman stabbed to death late Tuesday night in St. Cloud. Officers say they found 24-year-old Falus Ali suffering from multiple stab wounds and she died of her injuries at St. Cloud Hospital. Investigators say 26-year-old Saleebaan Mohamed Abdirisaaq was arrested at the scene and booked in the Benton County jail. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting local authorities with the investigation.

(Minneapolis, MN) — One person is dead after a duplex fire Wednesday night in northeast Minneapolis. Firefighters found heavy smoke showing from the first and second floors of the residence. Crews were able to extinguish the flames and later located a man dead on the first floor. No other injuries are reported. The American Red Cross is assisting three other occupants. Officials say this is the third fire fatality of the year in Minneapolis.

(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota Department of Public Safety is releasing data from its annual summer traffic enforcement campaigns. Traffic Safety Director Mike Hanson says there were more than 46,000 speeding citations issued, nearly 1,400 D-W-I arrests, and 178 move over violations issued during the “100 Deadliest Days” this summer. Nearly 300 law enforcement agencies patrolled roads statewide during the summer enforcement campaigns. Hanson says the goal isn’t to write tickets, instead it’s to save lives and prevent injuries during the busiest travel time of the year.

(St. Paul, MN) — For duck hunters, the marsh is calling. Minnesota’s regular waterfowl hunting season opens a half-hour before sunrise this Saturday. The Minnesota D-N-R reports the waterfowl counts were generally higher than last year. Total breeding duck abundance was estimated at 417,000 which is eight percent higher than last year, but 32 percent below the long-term average going back to 1968. Hunters can find information about required waterfowl stamps and hunting regulations on the D-N-R website.

(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota Wild skate in the newly named Grand Casino Arena tonight (Thurs 7pm) for the first time when they face the Dallas Stars in preseason play. The Stars edged the Wild 3-2 in overtime Tuesday night in Texas. Goaltender Filip Gustavsson is expected to start in the rematch, and several Wild regular players are making their exhibition debut tonight. The Chicago Blackhawks come to St. Paul on Sunday evening.
