(Washington, DC) — Congressional Republicans are going after Governor Tim Walz’s administration as part of their investigation into the 250-million-dollar Feeding our Future fraud scheme. The U-S House Education and Workforce committee issued subpoenas Wednesday for Governor Walz, and Minnesota Education Commissioner Willie Jett — plus U-S Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack and U-S-D-A Inspector General Phyliss Fong. A letter from the chairwoman says the agencies haven’t turned over everything it requested, and the committee wants additional documents related to the mismanagement of child nutrition programs.
>>New Walleye Limit on Lake Mille Lacs Doubles Boat Angler Trips
(Milaca, MN) — The new two-walleye limit on Lake Milles Lac is drawing a lot more people to the big lake in central Minnesota. The new regulation went into effect on August 16th. D-N-R fisheries manager Brian Nerbonne says there were 38-hundred boat angler trips in the first half of August and in the second half of the month more than 78-hundred people went out and fished. Nerbonne says the walleye season was catch-and-release on Mille Lacs until mid-August. The D-N-R’s initial proposal was a one-walleye limit, but it was increased to two fish due to fewer anglers this season.

(Gould Township, MN) — The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says the skeletal remains of at least three people believed to be several hundred years old have been found on the shores of Leech Lake. Deputies were called to a report of human remains discovered Saturday by a group of wild ricers in Gould Township. The Minnesota Indian Affairs Council was contacted due to the remains being found within a known cultural site. The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe is reminding Minnesotans of the importance of contacting authorities should they encounter suspected human remains and to not disturb the area.
>>Kingsbury’s Friends Detail Alleged Abuse in Day 2 of Fravel Pretrial Hearing
(Winona, MN) — Friends of the late Madeline Kingsbury of Winona say she confided in them about alleged physical abuse by her ex-boyfriend Adam Fravel. The second day of Fravel’s pretrial hearing Wednesday featured testimony from five of Kingsbury’s close friends. They told the court that Fravel had choked Madeline in front of their kids and encouraged her to end the relationship. One of the women said Kingsbury was nervous about leaving Fravel because he threatened to make it difficult to see her children if she did. Fravel will be tried for the first- and second-degree murder of Kingsbury next month in Mankato.
>>Red Wing Couple Pleads Guilty to Child Torture
(Red Wing, MN) — A couple from Red Wing is pleading guilty to child torture after their four children were found locked in cages in their home. The children, aged three to nine, were discovered in August 2022. Prosecutors say they had been confined in makeshift cages for up to 13 hours at a time. All charges except for child torture have been dismissed. Sentencing is scheduled for December 13th. The case has been described as severe abuse, exceeding typical definitions of physical and emotional harm.

(Pelican Lake, MN) — Authorities in Otter Tail County believe alcohol was a factor in a fatal crash late Wednesday night near Pelican Lake. Sheriff’s deputies say the vehicle crashed in rural Dunn Township and first responders were unable to save the driver. The adult victim was alone in the vehicle. The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to identify the driver.

(Detroit Lakes, MN) — Law enforcement in Becker County is investigating a crash in Detroit Lakes that left a pedestrian dead. Police say a car driven by a 19-year-old woman collided with an 81-year-old man from Detroit Lakes in the roadway Tuesday afternoon . Officers say the man died at the scene. Authorities say they plan to release the victim’s name today (Wed).
>>Burnsville Police Ask for Help Finding Suspects in Red Oak Park Shooting
(Burnsville, MN) — The Burnsville Police Department is asking the public to share any information or home surveillance video from the shooting in Red Oak Park Friday that injured five young men. Officials say the incident happened between 7:45 p and 8:30 pm and that shots were fired toward the basketball court area of the park. The five men injured are ages16, 17, 18, 18, and 19, with two of the victims still hospitalized. There were multiple suspects on the scene. No arrests have been made.

(Falcon Heights, MN) — With this year’s Minnesota State Fair in the books, Metro Transit has released its ridership numbers, which saw a 14% increase compared to last year. During the fair’s 12-day run, they provided nearly 331,000 express and regular route rides to and from the Falcon Heights fairgrounds. Metro Transit says this can partly be attributed to expanded State Fair Express Bus Service, with an extra 100 buses in operation each day.

(St. Paul, MN) — The Como Park Zoo in St. Paul is welcoming two new, endangered Amur tiger cubs. Born August 29th to mom Bernadette, the boy and girl were the first tiger cubs birthed at Como in 41 years. Amur tigers have been on the brink of extinction for years, with less than 400 in Russia and 20 in China.

(St. Paul, MN) — Winners of four straight to open 2024, the Golden Gophers soccer team returns to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium tonight (Thurs) to face Army. Minnesota is the only team in the Big Ten Conference with no losses or draws this season. Senior forward Khyah Harper was named to the Topdrawer Soccer ‘National Team of the Week’ Tuesday, thanks to her second three-goal outing of the season, and ranks second in the country in goals scored per match. A win vs. Army would give Minnesota its best five-match start to a season since 2018.
