>>Hundreds Attended Funeral for Annunciation Shooting Victim Fletcher Merkel

(Minneapolis, MN) — Family, friends, and the community gathered Sunday to remember the eight-year-old boy killed in the mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church.  Will Sharpe coached Fletcher Merkel in soccer, football, and basketball.  Sharpe said he plans to honor Fletcher by living with a sense of determination and a spirit of joy.  He told mourners, “Fletch, we love you. We miss you. We are different because of you. May your story continue through all of us.”  Ten-year-old student Harper Moyski also died in the shooting that wounded 21 others during Mass on August 27th.

 

>>Girl Injured in Annunciation Church Shooting Released from Hospital

(Minneapolis, MN) — The last victim hospitalized after last month’s shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church has been discharged.  Twelve-year-old Lydia Kaiser, who was critically injured while shielding a younger student, underwent two brain surgeries — one to remove bullet fragments and another to relieve swelling.  She is now walking and talking, though she still requires an additional procedure to replace a portion of her skull that was removed during treatment.  Kaiser was the last patient from the shooting to be released from Children’s Minnesota.

 

>>Senator Coleman Calls for Harsher Penalties for Suspects Fleeing Police

(St. Paul, MN) — Republican state Senator Julia Coleman from Waconia is renewing her call to pass harsher penalties for suspects who flee police in a reckless manner.  This comes after two women were killed and a child seriously injured after a carjacker fleeing from police crashed into their vehicle Thursday morning in Minneapolis.  Coleman says she’s been working on this legislation for nearly four years after her family was put at risk by a suspect fleeing police.  Coleman’s proposal includes a maximum penalty of four years in prison, and an $8,000 fine.

 

>>School Safety Discussion Planned for St. Cloud

(St. Cloud, MN) —  A state lawmaker is inviting community leaders and residents to come together to discuss school safety in St. Cloud.  D-F-L Senator Aric Putnam will join the St. Cloud police chief, superintendent of schools and a mental health expert for a panel discussion Wednesday night at St. Cloud Tech High School.  Senator Putnam says he would like residents to share their perspectives, ask questions and exchange in open dialogue on how to keep schools and communities safe.  The event comes following the mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis.

 

>>New Jersey Man Charged in Fatal Shooting of Sister of Timberwolves’ Naz Reid

(Jackson Township, NJ) — A man is jailed in New Jersey for the alleged fatal shooting of the sister of Minnesota Timberwolves center Naz Reid.  The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office says 28-year-old Toraya Reid was found dead of gunshots Saturday near an apartment building in Jackson Township.  Police say the 29-year-old suspect was taken into custody a short time later.  Shaquille Green is facing murder and unlawful possession of a weapon charges.  Investigators say Green was Reid’s boyfriend.

 

>>Man Accused in Stabbing Death of 37-Year-Old Woman in Richfield

(Richfield, MN) — Police in Richfield are investigating the stabbing death of a woman early Sunday.  A man called 9-1-1 to report a medical incident involving his roommate.  Responding officers discovered a 37-year-old woman lying in a bathroom with a large laceration on the top of her head.  Paramedics tried to save her, but she died at the scene.  Investigators say there were signs of a struggle, and her roommate had blood on his clothes and fresh injuries to his hands.  He was arrested on suspicion of murder.

 

>>Bicyclist from Randall Killed in Morrison County Crash

(Little Falls, MN) — A bicyclist is dead after a crash Saturday night in Morrison County near Little Falls.  The Minnesota State Patrol says a bicycle and pickup truck made contact on Highway 115.  The report says the bicyclist – 78-year-old William Messerschmidt of Randall – died at a Little Falls hospital.  Messerschmidt was wearing a helmet.  The pickup driver wasn’t hurt.

 

>>Girl Killed After Being Hit by Pickup Truck in Carlton County

(Wrenshall, MN) — Authorities are investigating a fatal crash in Carlton County involving an 11-year-old girl who was struck by a pickup truck while riding her bike in Wrenshall.  An off-duty police officer discovered Avery Anderson Friday night and immediately provided aid while coordinating emergency responders.  Anderson was airlifted to a Minneapolis hospital, where she later died from her injuries.  The driver of the pickup truck is cooperating with investigators and showed no signs of impairment, according to officials.

 

>>Alcohol Suspected in Deadly Head-on Crash in Dakota County

(Randolph, MN) — Alcohol is suspected in a head-on crash near Randolph in Dakota County that left two people dead.  State troopers say a pickup was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 56 when it collided with an S-U-V Saturday.  The S-U-V driver and passenger died at the scene.  They were identified as 68-year-old Peter Foxvong Olson and 49-year-old Patricia Ann Olson of Apple Valley.  The 28-year-old pickup driver was taken to Regions Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  He’s suspected of driver under the influence.

 

>>Moorhead Woman Arrested for Attempted Murder

(Moorhead, MN) — A Moorhead woman wanted in connection with an attempted murder in Fargo is under arrest.  Police took 23-year-old Lena Deoliveira into custody Sunday without incident.  The arrest follows an assault reported early Friday in Fargo.  Officers arrived to find a man suffering from serious injuries.  Authorities say Deoliveira and the victim are known to each other.  The man was transported to a hospital for treatment.  Deoliveira is currently in  the Clay County Jail and is expected to be extradited to Cass County.

 

>>Injured Colorado Woman Rescued from BWCA

(Ely, MN) — A woman from Colorado is hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries suffered in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.  The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office received a distress signal from a Garmin safety device Sunday afternoon indicating the person could have a broken leg.  Deputies, firefighters, state troopers, and a helicopter helped rescue the woman from the B-W-C-A northwest of Ely.  The 70-year-old from Fort Collins was taken to a hospital in Duluth.

 

>>Vikings Kick Off Season at Bears on Monday Night Football

(Chicago, IL) — The Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears kick off the regular season tonight (Mon) at Soldier Field.  Detroit Lakes native Adam Thielen returned to the Purple and is excited to start tonight for his hometown team.  Thielen said, “I’m like a kid, you know, like in a candy shop, like this is what I love to do. Obviously, this place means so much to me. I’m just happy to be here.”  Vikings quarterback J-J McCarthy will be making his first career start against the Bears.  Minnesota went 14-and-3 last season before losing in the playoffs to the Rams.

 

>>Twins, Ober Win Series Finale in Kansas City

(Kansas City, MO) — The Minnesota Twins topped the Royals 5-1 on Sunday afternoon to salvage the series finale in Kansas City.  Byron Buxton led off the game with his 30th home run and Kody Klemens had a two-run shot in the fourth inning.  Buxton joins Kirby Puckett as the only Twins players with 30 homers and 20 stolen bases in a season.  Bailey Ober allowed one run over five-and-a-third innings and struck out six for his fifth win.  The Twins play tonight (Mon) at the L-A Angels.
