The Minneapolis City Council today approved a conversion “therapy” ban for youth 17 and under. The measure is the first of its kind passed in the state. Cat Salonek with OutFront Minnesota is hopeful state lawmakers take up the issue again in the upcoming session to vote on a statewide ban and says “what we don’t want to create are just little islands of safety for LGBTQ youth, we want our whole state to be safe for all youth, no matter where they live.” Salonek says Minnesota is one of 32 states that still allow conversion therapy. Opponents of the ban say it infringes on religious and first amendment rights.
