(Brooklyn Center, MN) — The executive director of the Minnesota State High School League Erich Martens says last week’s decision to cancel the spring sports calendar was not an easy one and he is heartbroken for the athletes and coaches who will miss out on the competition. Martens says he feels especially sad for the seniors, who will not get a final season of their high school careers. Martens says they shut down the spring sports schedule in following some guidelines put forth by the state in not allowing students back into the schools for the remainder of the academic year. The MSHSL board did approve to adjust the summer waiver period. The no-contact period for coaches and players during the summer waiver period was shortened from seven days to three days around the Fourth of July. The summer waiver period was extended one week to run from June 1st through August 7th. Martens says their future plans will still be somewhat dictated by what protocols and rules are in place from the State of Minnesota.
