The U-S Fish and Wildlife Service announced new measures this week to protect lions under the Endangered Species Act by limiting import of lion parts into the U-S. The issue came to a head when Minnesota dentist Walter Palmer killed a prized lion in Africa. Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society of the United States, says “anyone who is a convicted poacher, if they have wildlife violations like Palmer had, he would not be allowed to import the animal under any circumstances.” Pacelle says about 720 lion trophies came into the U-S in 2014 but expects fewer than 20 per year under this new regulation.
