Sentences will be lower for some non-violent drug offenses, under new state laws taking effect today (Mon). Republican Representative Tony Cornish from Vernon Center says it was a compromise the law enforcement community doesn’t like. Cornish says, “At an all-time high of drug use, when we reduce the restrictions or sentencing guidelines, that didn’t make ’em very happy. But like I say, it was a compromise.” But Democratic Senator Jeff Hayden of Minneapolis says, “I don’t think we should be sending people to jail… for long periods of time for people… [who] have addiction or [are] feeding their addiction.” Hayden says under the new law there are tough sentences for drug “kingpins,” while those with addictions can get treatment rather than prison.
