The new bridge across the Mississippi River at Winona opens tomorrow and dignitaries will be on hand for the official dedication in the morning. The bridge was closed for a time in 2008 and replaced by ferry service, after inspectors found problems similar to those that caused the 35-W bridge collapse. MN-DOT’s Mike Dougherty says “there are some weight restrictions on the current bridge, but with the new bridge opening up that will not be a problem and we’ll be able to keep traffic flowing well, before we turn attention to do a rehab on the existing historic bridge.” Dougherty says when the historic bridge renovation is complete in late 2019 or early 2020, traffic capacity will double across the Mississippi River at Winona.
