(St. Paul, MN) — A new bill would give access to paid leave to all Minnesota workers. DFL Senator Katie Sieben (SEE-ben) from Cottage Grove says her Paid Family and Medical Leave Act provides “a most basic family value”. She says paid leave is “not something that should be up for debate” and that families need time together when a major life event occurs and policymakers need to find a way to make that happen. The bill creates an insurance program to provide workers with up to 12 weeks paid leave in certain situations and would be self-funded equally by employers and employees. It’s estimated the cost per week to the average Minnesota worker would be around $1.70.
