Veterans Affairs Commissioner Larry Shellito
Minnesota Veterans with a pension are entitled to a tax break starting this year thanks to a bill passed with bi-partisan support and signed into law by Governor Dayton in 2016. For the first time, all military pensions are fully exempt from state income taxes. Veterans Affairs Commissioner Larry Shellito says “it means that there’s on state income only, a deduction that they can take that will lower their total tax payment for the year.”
Shellito calls Minnesota “one of the most Veteran-friendly states in the nation.” Around 900,000 Minnesotans are expected to file their taxes in this final week before the April 18th deadline.
Minnesota Veterans with questions about the tax exemption are urged to visit the Department of Revenue’s website here for more information.
