There will be no criminal charges in a fatal officer-involved shooting last May. Ramsey County Attorney John Choi announced today that the use of deadly force was justified when St. Paul Police Officer Joshua Raichert shot and killed 29-year-old Eugene Smith. Officials say Raichert was part of an FBI Safe Streets Task Force conducting a sweep at a St. Paul home believed to contain illegal drugs and firearms. During the sweep, officials say Smith fired a shot hitting the wall above Raichert’s shoulder. In return, the officer fired six shots at Smith, killing him. Choi’s decision comes after an independent investigation of the case from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
