Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman
After a comprehensive review of more than 14,000 criminal cases across Minnesota, DNA testing revealed no exonerations for convicted felons. Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman says “the goal was to see if new DNA technology could prove that a person was wrongfully convicted.” A federal grant allowed officials to review 14,177 cases from 1981 through 1999. Only two cases are considered still open.
One of those, a high-profile Twin Cities case involving Billy Glaze. Glaze was convicted of a series of murders in Minneapolis involving American Indian women in the 1980’s. Glaze died in prison in 2015 after spending more than 25 years behind bars. The Minnesota Innocence Project continues the fight to clear his name.
