State Representative and historian Dean Urdahl from Grove City says he’s glad the Minnesota Historical Society decided six Civil War paintings must be returned to their original places in the Governor’s Reception Room following a major renovation of the State Capitol. Governor Dayton wanted artwork showing other facets of Minnesota’s history but Urdahl says, “These are very important paintings, marking… one of our certainly greatest contributions to American history, and they should be displayed where they can be meaningfully interpreted.” Two paintings of the U-S/Dakota War of 1862 are being removed from the Capitol because of objections by Native Americans. Urdahl says that’s one of the biggest events in state history and “we have to do a better job” on it in the new spaces at the renovated Minnesota Capitol. Urdahl notes there are no paintings in the Capitol depicting Minnesota’s other major Indian tribe, the Ojibwe.
