(Undated) — President Obama today (WED) announced 63-year-old U-S Court of Appeals Judge Merrick Garland as his Supreme Court nominee. Republicans have said that a Supreme Court appointment to fill the vacancy left by late Justice Antonin Scalia (scuh-LEE-uh) should wait until after the November election. Carleton College Political Science Professor Steven Schier (sheer) says there’s already a lot of anger and political conflict this year and it’s likely the president’s court nomination could lead to another example of that anger and conflict. And Schier says if the Republican senate refuses to act on this nomination, that could “divide the country and give us yet another issue to yell about going into November.”
