Officer charged in Philando Castile’s death makes first court appearance today

November 18, 2016 By Tasha Redel

Philando Castile Memorial, Falcon Heights

The officer who shot and killed Philando Castile makes his first court appearance today (FRI 1:30). Ramsey County Attorney John Choi is charging Jeronimo Yanez (YAH-nez) with 2nd degree manslaughter. Some say the charges don’t go far enough, but former U-S Attorney for Minnesota, Thomas Heffelfinger, disagrees…

Heffelfinger says in his opinion, the fact that the officer shot Castile seven times shows that Yanez panicked and also created a risk for Castile’s girlfriend and her young daughter, who were in the car at the time of the shooting.
