Cold temps and the winter trout fishing opener have some Minnesotans out on lakes and streams this weekend, but the D-N-R’s Debbie Munson Badini warns ice is extremely inconsistent across the state, even as far north as Duluth and Warroad. Munson Badini says with the crazy weather Minnesota has had the winter, people can’t depend on either the temperature outside or the calendar to determine whether ice is safe. She says there’s a lot of ice that started to freeze, then thawed, and now is freezing again — and that makes for weak ice, even if it’s 10 inches thick. Before going out, check ice conditions with local law enforcement, bring ice picks, let people know where you’re going, and wear a life jacket.
