Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar has apologized for her recent controversial tweet about Israel. In the tweet, Omar suggested Republican support for Israel is fueled by donations from a prominent pro-Israel group. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other House Democratic leaders earlier today called on the congresswoman to apologize. Omar tweeted this afternoon “my intention is never to offend my constituents or Jewish Americans as a whole. We have to always be willing to step back and think through criticism, just as I expect people to hear me when others attack me for my identity. This is why I unequivocally apologize.” State GOP Chair Jennifer Carnahan says, however, “that kind of anti-semitic commentary has no place in our country or our society and this is not the first time we’ve seen this from representative Omar, so an apology in this instance is not enough…she should be removed from the House foreign affairs committee immediately.” Omar is one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress and has been supportive of a movement to boycott and sanction Israel over the treatment of Palestinians.
