Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, Senator Bernie Sanders and 11 other federal lawmakers are asking OSHA to investigate what they call “chronic violations of workplace safety at all Amazon warehouses.” It comes after Monday’s “Prime Day” strike by workers at Amazon’s facility in Shakopee. Omar says Amazon is one of the most profitable companies in the world, yet “they fail to treat their workers with basic humanity” and have set up “a 21st century sweatshop.” Amazon responds it offers “industry leading pay of $15 per hour, benefits, and a safe workplace for our employees.” The company adds if unions and politicians really want to help the American worker, they should focus their energy on increasing the federal minimum wage.
