Eliminate tuition and fees at all public four-year colleges and universities, plus community colleges, trade schools and apprenticeship programs — the proposal today from Fifth District Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (IL-han OH-mar) along with Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders and others. Backers say the 2.2-trillion-dollar cost would be paid by what they call a small Wall Street speculation tax on stock trades, bonds and derivatives. Omar says the American people bailed out Wall Street and now it’s time for Wall Street to reciprocate. She adds there are 45 million Americans with student debt — holding them back from purchasing a home, starting a family, opening a business or going into public service. The proposal comes just two days before the first round of Democratic presidential debates.
