Research practices in the U-of-M’s Psychiatry Department show “a profound lack of knowledge” about clinical research and “intentional lack of adherence” to state and federal requirements, says an assessment by an outside consultant. One “critical violation”: a faculty member who approached in-patient children, without parental consent, to see if they would participate in her study, and if they said yes, would then contact the family. Faculty and staff interviews indicated concern that recruitment and well-being of human subjects is compromised by conflict of interest, including “enrolling subjects for personal gain.” A 2015 legislative auditor’s report raised concerns that a man who committed suicide in 2004 may have been coerced into a drug study at the U-of-M. University officials say they’re committed to correcting all issues.
