The German company that owns a ship that was detained in the Duluth harbor for over six weeks last fall for pollution violations has agreed to pay a million dollars in fines. U-S officials say on at least ten occasions, the vessel Cornelia’s engineers instructed the crew to discharge oily waste waste overboard, and it happened at least once in May 2015 when the ship was in the Great Lakes. An agreement between the Coast Guard and the German owners of the ship allowed the Cornelia to leave Duluth on December 18th while the investigation continued.
