PolyMet says it will put up 544 million dollars during its first three years of construction and operation in Hoyt Lakes as insurance against possible environmental damage from copper-nickel mining, reports the Star Tribune. The amount to protect taxpayers from bearing cleanup costs is significantly higher than PolyMet estimated one year ago. The proposed project, which is hotly contested by environmental groups, now goes under state review.
