The Cathedral of Saint Paul
In a move that was *not* unexpected, victims of priest sex abuse have voted overwhelmingly for a bankruptcy reorganization plan that backers say would allow them to recover more potential compensation than a competing plan from the Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Supporters of the plan say the archdiocese would have to kick in 80 million dollars, over six times what church officials proposed, plus victims could sue the archdiocese’s insurance carriers and individual parishes. Archbishop Bernard Hebda responds the Archdiocese plan is “fair and just” and would make 155 million dollars available to claimants without the need for additional litigation or uncertainty. A final decision rests with a U-S bankruptcy judge who must consider results of the referendum in his ruling.
