Lawyers dealing with Prince’s estate are asking the state legislature to pass a law clearly establishing in Minnesota what’s termed the “Right of Publicity.” Attorney Joel Leviton says the Right of Publicity is “really very personal. It’s about your name and it’s about your image, and having the right to control the commercial use of that.” Proposed legislation would extend those protections to a person’s heirs after they die, which backers say will preserve the value of their estate. Bills have been introduced in both the Minnesota House and Senate and a hearing is scheduled for later this week.
