Prosecutors re-open review of officer-involved shooting after omitted evidence comes to light

September 21, 2018 By Bill Werner

Ramsey County prosecutors are re-opening their review of the fatal shooting of a suspect by a sheriff’s deputy in Vadnais Heights in April 2017, after determining earlier that the killing was justified. The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said Thursday an audio recording of the encounter by 47-year-old Darren Jahnke on his cell phone was omitted from the original case file but has now been sent to prosecutors. They say the agent initially assigned to review data on the phone did not listen to those recordings.

Authorities say Jahnke was shot after he struggled with officers inside a parked S-U-V. Family members say the officers involved should be prosecuted.
