A protest is planned this afternoon in Minneapolis after yesterday’s announcement that there would be no charges against the officers involved in the fatal shooting of Thurman Blevins. Civil rights activist Nekima Levy-Pounds says “the goal of today’s protest is to continue to raise awareness about the unjust killing of Thurman Blevins at the hands of the Minneapolis police force. Thurman Blevins is the latest victim of police brutality, of the use of excessive force.” Levy-Pounds protestors are also “asking the Minneapolis Police Department to stop using the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to conduct investigations into officer-involved officer-involved shooting cases” adding that “the BCA is not a credible agency for investigating” such cases. Levy-Pounds says the state should work with local cities to develop an agency–with community input–that is responsible for investigating officer-involved shooting cases. Protestors are also demanding that the officers who shot Blevins be fired. Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman says the officers’ actions were justified because Blevins ignored police instructions and pointed a gun at them. Here is more with Nekima Levy-Pounds:
