There were demonstrations in Minneapolis and St. Paul over the weekend in protest of Friday’s acquittal of Officer Jeronimo Yanez in the fatal shooting of Philando Castile. After the verdict was announced, demonstrations began at the State Capitol and worked their way to Interstate 94 in St. Paul–resulting in 18 arrests. Community activist Pastor Danny Givens says of the verdict “it’s setting a precedence that black people can be murdered legally in 2017 just like we could be murdered legally in 1955, just like we could be murdered legally in 1901, just like we could be murdered legally in 1891 it’s still the same system.” The U-S Attorney’s Office in Minnesota says it’s considering whether any additional federal review is justified after Friday’s acquittal.
