REAL ID drivers license bill moving forward in MN Senate

May 10, 2016 By Bill Werner

Sen. Warren Limmer (R-Maple Grove)

A bill reworking Minnesota drivers licenses to meet federal REAL ID requirements is moving ahead in the Minnesota Senate, despite warnings from Republicans like Maple Grove Senator Warren Limmer about the federal government gathering information on citizens.   Limmer says, “Just like anything else the federal government gets its hands on, it will continue to grow and expand and ultimately dissolve much of the privacy rights of our individual citizens.”  Saint Louis Park Democrat Ron Latz acknowledges he’s “skeptical a bit too,” but says the state is “kind of under the gun from the feds.”  Latz says given the world we live in, it’s probably necessary to do a better job screening I-Ds of those boarding aircraft.
