Superior National Forest officials are urging campers to get in the habit of good fire-prevention practices even though wildfire danger currently isn’t high. Spokeswoman Becca Manlove there’s been quite a lot of rain, but things can dry out quickly and sometimes fires re-start even after they’re thoroughly doused. She says, “If you build the fire on the black soil of Iowa and walked away, you might not get a fire later. But here it hasn’t been dirt that long and there’s a lot of oxygen in it and a lot of burnable material.” Manlove says campers should build fires within fire grates only, on rock or mineral soil.
