A federal ban on sports betting is being overturned by the U-S Supreme Court. Republican State Representative Pat Garofalo of Farmington has been pushing for legalized sports betting here and says he looks “forward to Minnesota joining those states that are going to provide for a safe, fair and regulated sports gambling experience, as opposed to the current environment, which is a black market, under the radar and we don’t know what this money is going for.” Garofalo says legalized sports betting would be good for consumers and create additional revenue for local sports teams. But he says it’s not likely a change at the state level would occur this legislative session–as there are only five days remaining. Garofalo estimates that in the first year of legalized sports betting, around two-billion dollars in wagers would be made in Minnesota. He says moving forward, it’s very important to have stability in the “gambling environment” and he adds that putting a bill through without tribal support would be “problematic and would not be good for the state.”
