DFL Representative Laurie Halverson of Eagan is sharing her stories about incidents of sexual harassment at the State Capitol. Halverson says she’s experienced inappropriate comments from male lawmakers and was shown a graphic sexual photograph from someone’s phone. She says “for many of us who are women who work at the Capitol in a variety of capacities, a lobbyist or a staffer or a member, it’s not unusual for us to have these stories. And so I wanted to be sure that people know that this is extremely commonplace.” Halverson says at the time the incidents made her feel embarrassed and ashamed, but now she says she realizes the incidents were not her fault, and she wants other women to know it’s not their fault either. Here is more of MNN’s Scott Peterson’s conversation with Representative Halverson.
