A bicameral group of Democrats is calling on Justice Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from future cases that come before the high court involving the January 6th assault on the U-S Capitol. It’s in the wake of reports about text messages Thomas’ wife, Virginia Thomas, exchanged with former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows regarding the 2020 presidential election. Representative Betty McCollum is calling on Justice Thomas to resign and says “the fact that he has not recused himself, as other Supreme Court Justices have in the past, when there’s been a conflict of interest, even regarding a spouse, is absolutely wrong of him, he knows better.” Asked if it’s her stance is an effort to “balance” the conservative majority court, McCollum says “that is not a calculation of my decision, as a person who lives in this country, as a person who taught high school social studies, we expect our Supreme Court to uphold itself and for the members of the court to follow the law, the failure to disclose in and of itself is enough that I think he should resign after that many years.” State Republican leaders have not commented on calls for Thomas to step down.
