Repubs say DFL candidate for governor Walz flip-flopping on minimum wage

October 25, 2018 By Bill Werner

The Jeff Johnson for governor campaign says Democratic rival Tim Walz is making Minnesotans dizzy by flip-flopping on whether he supports a 15-dollar minimum wage.   Walz’s website said he does, but Wednesday morning he told reporters he isn’t ready to say what minimum wage number he’d back.  “That kind of short-circuits the way that I build coalitions,” he said.  “We have not had that general conversation yet. We have not built it together. What I do know is… that we need to have it.”  Wednesday afternoon, Walz tweeted “I support a $15 minimum wage. I voted for a $15 minimum wage in Congress, and would be proud to sign it into law if it came to my desk as Governor.”

Republican rival Jeff Johnson says Walz “kind of gives different answers, depending upon who he’s talking to — and so this is the same as guns and single-payer health care and Line 3 and tax increases.”  Johnson says he does *not* support a 15-dollar minimum wage because “it hurts the people that we claim we want to help” and is a “killer” for the smallest businesses.
