Results of today’s primary election could be delayed in some races

August 11, 2020 By Bill Werner

Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon says the large number of absentee ballots in today’s primary election could delay final results in some races — but he says that’s not because anyone fell down on the job. Simon says, “The legislature wisely this last session, anticipating the tidal wave of absentee ballot requests, gave local governments — counties and cities… — two extra days after Election Day to handle all those incoming ballots.”

Absentee ballots will be counted as long as they’re postmarked before the end of the day today (Tues), and *received* by election officials by Thursday. As last count, officials had received over 637-thousand requests for absentee ballots — an all-time record — and over 423-thousand absentee ballots had been returned and accepted.
