State Rep. Kim Norton (DFL-Rochester)
State Representative Kim Norton has introduced a bill that would require background checks on gun sales at shows or over the Internet. Norton, a Democrat from Rochester, says her bill will help prevent suicides, impulse shootings and accidents. Andrew Rothman with the Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance responds criminals and the insane will continue getting guns through thefts and back alleys, and criminals will continue to use straw purchasers to illegally obtain guns. Norton’s bill also increases the waiting period for gun transfers from seven to 28 days and has new training requirements for gun buyers. She says measures in her bill have broad support all across Minnesota. Rothman says the bill doesn’t have a chance in the 2016 session.
