A Catholic priest from San Diego has been sentenced to 10 years probation after admitting to sexual misconduct while celebrating a private Mass eight years ago at a woman’s home in Mendota Heights. According to the criminal complaint, the two had previously kissed and 35-year-old Jacob Bertrand had “mystically proposed” to the woman. Under Minnesota law, members of the clergy can be charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct for having sex with a person they’re not married to while providing spiritual advice — even if the sex is consensual.
